A Simple Way to Protect Your Wood Table
A dining table is meant to be enjoyed. Meals, coffee with a friend, homework, and celebrations all happen around it. A few small habits can help protect its finish while you continue to use it every day.
Give drinks a landing place. A coaster keeps moisture from a cold glass off the surface and provides a place for a hot mug. Choose one with a clean, smooth underside, and check it occasionally for trapped crumbs or grit.
Keep hot serving dishes on a suitable trivet. A folded napkin may look protective, but it may offer little insulation. Set out trivets before the food arrives so nobody has to make a hurried choice about where to put a hot dish.
Lift objects instead of sliding them. Serving bowls, centrepieces, and even small decorations can pick up particles underneath. Sliding them across a finished surface can leave fine marks. It takes only a moment to lift and reposition them.
Attend to spills promptly. Blot liquid with a soft cloth and dry the area gently. Pay attention to seams, edges, and places where moisture might sit unnoticed. If the finish looks changed after the surface has dried, pause before applying a cleaner or polish.
These habits are easy to share with the rest of the household and with guests. You do not have to make a beautiful table off-limits to keep it looking its best.
Wood surfaces differ in age, construction, and finish, so follow any care instructions provided by the maker. When you do not know what finish is on a valued piece, simple prevention is often the wisest place to start.
