Before You Move That Wooden Furniture

Rearranging a room for guests or making space for the season can be satisfying. Moving a wooden cabinet or sideboard, though, deserves a few minutes of preparation. Many preventable marks happen during the move rather than during everyday use.

Begin by clearing everything from the top. Remove items from drawers and shelves so the piece is lighter and nothing shifts inside it. If drawers or other parts are designed to lift out easily, set them somewhere safe and remember where each belongs. Do not force a part that does not release readily.

Look at the route before lifting. Check doorways, corners, rugs, and anything that could catch a leg or projecting trim. Protect vulnerable edges and nearby surfaces as needed. Plan where the furniture will land so it does not have to be held up while someone decides.

Use enough people for the size and weight of the piece. Support it from sound structural areas rather than pulling on a handle, decorative rail, or thin top edge. Keep fingers clear of pinch points. If the piece is unusually heavy, fragile, or valuable, consider experienced moving help.

Avoid dragging furniture across a finished floor. The underside may contain rough hardware or trapped grit, and a heavy piece can leave marks on both the floor and the furniture itself. Once it is in place, check that it sits securely before returning the drawers and belongings.

These steps may take longer than simply pushing the piece across the room. They are a small investment compared with repairing a chipped corner, a strained joint, or a scratched floor. Careful handling is one of the simplest ways to preserve the woodwork you enjoy living with.
